PERFECT FLORISTS EXIST! LEARN HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU

How do you choose your wedding florist? What questions do you even ask during your consultations?!

Wedding flowers are such a large part of the décor for your wedding or event that it can be really scary! Some couples decide that flowers are very important and put a larger than average portion of their wedding budget towards them. Others just want a few flowers because they feel it is more of a ‘that’s what you have to do’ sort of thing.

Regardless of what your needs and wants are, you will still be interviewing your florist. Don’t feel intimidated or overwhelmed! I promise we are real people just like you. We understand that there are many price points, design styles, and that it can be hard to put into words what you are envisioning.

First, I want to talk about the different types of companies and business models that are out there. There are several different types of operations and it is important to find the right fit for you.

1. Full Service Florist

  • These shops offer daily deliveries on top of weddings and special events. Depending on the design team, they may not be as over the top with some designs as wedding specialists. They are still amazing and incredibly talented! Just give the potential shop a call and get a feel for what their style is, and if they have a wedding specialist on staff.
  • Some bonus features of a brick and mortar store is that they have regular posted hours, and walk in capabilities, along with lots of flowers on hand you can draw inspiration from if you are unsure what you are looking for.
  • These companies can handle just about anything you throw at them, and have a wide range of styles since the fill all the daily floral orders.
  • Mid Range of Price Point

2. Home Based Florist – Events Only (Usually)

  • These florists work out of a studio or at home in a dedicated space. They may or may not have the commercial refrigeration that a full service florist or a wedding specialty floral designer does. They do have lower overhead costs and can be a budget friendly option, especially if you are only wanting bridal party flowers.
  • May not have the training that Specialists and Full Service Florists have, be sure to ask when you are inquiring about their services.
  • Lower to Mid Range Price Points

3. Wedding and Special Event Specialty Floral Shops

  • These companies only speak Wedding and Events. That experience, creativity, and specialization can potentially come with a higher price tag. These florists know their stuff, and can be more creative with designs and problem solving at venues. They will also have more rental options for you to browse, and may even offer more regular décor rental options in addition to flowers.
  • Typically higher price points for the higher end services, and exclusivity.

Second, I STRONGLY suggest you look at design style for any florist before you inquire with them. Like any artist, each person has a specific aesthetic and will feel more confident creating designs for you. Look at their website, Instagram, Facebook, and any photo galleries from past weddings.

It can be overwhelming how many options there are, BUT you can look at pictures and see what you are drawn to. What you definitely do not want and more. Know that a flowers can add up fast. If you are on a limited budget, make a list of priority items. That way when you are talking with your wedding florist they can make them the impact items.

I know the words PRICE POINT can be scary, but they don’t have to be. We need to know what you are comfortable budgeting so that we can suggest and build designs that will actually be perfect for you. Be upfront and honest with your wedding florist!

We want the planning process to be smooth, easy and enjoyable. It takes a lot of time to put designs together and it is deflating when items have to be reworked because a client can’t afford their dream flowers. The more information you give us, the closer we can get to your vision.

How do you determine the budget for your wedding flowers? Make a list of what is most important to you, down to the least important, along with an overall wedding budget. Where do wedding flowers come in on the list?

Wedding experts say that couples spend on average 10% of their overall budget on flowers. If flowers are really high on your priority list I would say spend more than 10%. If they are not that important, spend less and use the extra dollars on something that is high on the list. Make your wedding day a representation of what you and your fiancé hold near and dear to your hearts.

Okay. You have your finances figured out, you know what kind of aesthetic you are looking for, you have your venue and date locked in. Now it is time to start sending out inquiries. Ask vendors that you have hired already if they have any recommendations, they have a unique view of the day and chances are have worked with awesome people.

Google florists and read reviews. Search social media for florists that match the style you are looking for. REMEMBER: some photographers heavily edit their photos, and the photos are no longer true to life. Inspiration photos are a great place to start, but make sure the florist and you are on the same page when discussing floral options and color palettes.

Once you have the list of companies that you would like to potentially work with, reach out. Some may have forms to fill out, others may give you preliminary rough estimates, and others may require a meeting before quoting a price. Make sure you have the list of items you are wanting and ask if they have suggestions for the venue.

Once all the proposals have been received, look them over, weigh all the options and pick the florist that you had the best connection with. That will result in less stress and worry over the whole planning process. Ask any questions, make any adjustments, pay the retainer and just sit back and relax. You are one step closer to the BIG DAY!
